What is afternoon tea? 
Afternoon tea, sometimes called high tea, although high tea is slightly different from afternoon tea. It is a tradition from the 19th century, which was basically a filler meal between the lunch and dinner, it was common to take dinner at 20:00 so this mini meal was to relieve any hunger in between main meals. It commonly consisted of sandwiches, cakes, pastries and of course tea, it wasn't until the 20th century that scones were added to the foods comprising the afternoon tea.

What is high tea? 
Although these days high tea is sometimes used to refer to afternoon tea, traditionally it was quite a different experience. High tea related more to the industrial working class. When they arrived home from a busy day of intense manual labour they would then sit down for high tea at around 18:00. The meal consisted of a mug of tea, veg, bread and if they could afford it occasionally cheese and meat. The reason perhaps why is was called high tea, was that unlike afternoon tea, high tea was usually enjoyed sitting up to a table, whereby afternoon tea was typically taken in a more relaxed form, of lower standing seats or sofas.
