The Destrehan Plantation is located in the south east of Louisiana and was established way back in 1787. It is the oldest French Colonial house in the lower Mississippi Valley. The history of the Destrehan Plantation is immense, the Union Army seized the plantation during the Civil War and created the Rost Home Colony, this was a place for freed slaves to go to learn trades to give them the skills to transition into a life of freedom.

This plantation home stands grandly in the grounds that are just meters away from the Mississippi River, to visit the Destrehan Plantation is an experience whereby you will learn of the history of this sugar plantation, you will also gain an understanding as to the conditions slaves were subjected to. This is a guided tour of Destrehan Plantation, there are costumed actors that will portray the way of life during the Destrehan family dynasty. Demonstrations of trade and skills that occurred during the plantations working years offer an insightful experience.

The 1811 Slave Revolt Museum is next on the agenda, this is a truly a thought provoking experience. Learn about the story of their revolt against their masters and how they ended their enslavement and progressed onto a path of freedom. 

After your visit to the Destrehan Plantation, you will take to the coach and head over to Manchac Swap and you will take a cruise through a wildlife refuge, where there is the opportunity to see the home of the Cajun werewolf. It is of course possible that you may not see the Rougarou but you are very likely to see some alligators.
